Design for the distance
A sign is read from much farther away than a flyer, and often from a moving car. The first question we ask is how far away people will be. A rough starting point many designers use is about 1 inch of capital letter height for every 10 feet of viewing distance. The chart below draws that to scale.
Size is only part of it. Bold, simple type faces read better than thin or decorative ones, strong contrast between the letters and the background matters more than color choice, and empty space around the words helps the eye find them. We keep the message short: a name, what you do, and one way to reach you.
Files for the sign shop
Sign shops usually want vector files at full size or at a stated scale, with text converted to outlines and colors called out. Cut vinyl needs solid shapes in one color per layer; printed vinyl and banners can carry photos and gradients. Send us the shop's specs and we'll follow them, or we'll ask the shop directly with your permission.
Outdoor conditions
Sun fades some colors faster than others, and glare on glass can wash out light graphics. For windows we can design a light and a dark version, or add a backing layer so a decal reads in both daylight and at night. Tell us which way the window faces if you know.

Do you make or install the signs?
No. We design the graphics and prepare the files. Your local sign shop prints, cuts and installs them.
Do I need a permit for my sign?
Rules on sign size and placement vary by city and by property. Check with your landlord and your city before ordering. We can design to any size limit you give us.
